Children in Gaza are "dying from the combined effects of malnutrition and disease," the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday.

Shaima, a Palestinian mother in Gaza whose son Fadi has cystic fibrosis, said, "nothing is available anymore."

"We have been at war for five months now," she said. "Day by day, the child’s condition deteriorated. Until it reached the point of dehydration."

The WHO is helping to set up stabilization and nutrition centres in Gaza, but said it has seen a "high number of severe acute malnutrition with complications" in children in recent weeks.

"Today, myself, I saw six children with severe acute malnutrition with complications," Dr. Ahmed Dhair, the head of WHO’s Gaza team said on Monday.

Only an expansion of land crossings into Gaza can help prevent famine in the densely populated Palestinian enclave, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Thursday.
