With rainbow flags and artistic performances, Chileans celebrated on Tuesday as Congress passed a law to legalize same-sex marriage in a milestone for the conservative South American nation.

That same night Palacio de la Moneda, the Chilean government headquarters, lit with the colours of the LGBTQ+ flag as locals passing by stopped to take photos of the building.

Emotions and happiness were evident during the celebrations, as the law is considered historic in the country where the legal battle began a decade ago.

"For all Chileans, especially for us, the people who are going through the same, trying to start a family... Nothing to say; I'm left without words," said an unidentified demonstrator.

Chile's Senate and lower house of parliament both voted in favour of the bill on Tuesday, which had previously been partially approved in November before the Senate sent it back to a committee to clarify ambiguities.
