A car drove into a crowd of people in western Berlin on Wednesday, killing one person and injuring several others before smashing through a shop window, police said.

The incident took place next to the war-ravaged Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, one of the German capital's best-known landmarks.

More than a dozen people were injured, police spokesperson Thilo Cablitz said at the scene. Some injuries were serious, he added.

"To reconstruct the event, we are obviously looking if this was an intentional act or a traffic accident that might have occurred due to a medical emergency," Cablitz said, adding that the driver had been detained at the scene.

Rescue workers moved apparently conscious people on stretchers towards an ambulance, including one woman sitting up, and another who covered her face with her hand.
