Speaking in the House of Commons in Ottawa on Tuesday, Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux said that “Rent has doubled. House prices have doubled and mortgage payments are up 150 per cent,” ahead of Canada’s Fall Economic Statement.

Housing Minister Sean Fraser said that the federal government was making the investments necessary “to get Canada building again” and that “it is working.” Fraser said that based on a Statistics Canada report released on Monday, investments in residential construction have increased nearly eight per cent.

“When we hear words, common sense and conservatives, we get the shivers,” Government House Leader Karina Gould added later on. “We know that means cuts for Canadians, harm to Canadians, and nothing good comes out of it.”

Conservative MP Dan Albas responded by saying inflationary government deficits were “to blame” for rising living costs and asking if Prime Minister Justin Trudeau thinks that “all Canadians are auditioning for 'Les Mis." The musical, Les Misérables, centers around a 19th-century French peasant and his desire for redemption after spending years in jail for stealing bread for his sister's starving child.
