Canadian hospitals are struggling to cope with staffing shortages, growing wait times, and in some cases closing units altogether.

“We are seeing rural ERs and facilities closing because of a lack of nursing staff. Wait times are going up almost on a weekly basis,” says Darlene Jackson, the president of the Manitoba Nurses Union.

“I talked to a nurse the other day who said to me that ‘I spend my entire shift apologizing to my patients,” Jackson adds.

Marney Blunt reports on a system under stress and growing fears for the fall.
