Canada has marked its first National Ribbon Skirt Day to recognize an important symbol in Indigenous culture.

Manitoba Sen. Mary Jane McCallum’s bill to recognize every Jan. 4 passed in Parliament late last year, following the federal government’s formal recognition of Orange Shirt Day in 2021.

Touria Izri explains the significance of these sacred skirts, and the story of the Saskatchewan girl who inspired this special day.
