NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh addressed the media on Tuesday after Canadians elected the Liberals to another minority government, blaming Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the low voter turnout in the election.

Early figures suggest voter turnout nationally was less than 59 per cent, although nearly a million mail-in ballots are still being counted.

Singh said he believes “cynicism” is the biggest problem facing his party, and blamed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the growing mistrust in political leaders. Singh said Trudeau had failed to live up to his promises and that “people ended up hurting” as a result.

However, he said he has confident in his leadership.

The NDP leader said he was “disappointed” NDP candidates had not been elected in Quebec, and about the loss of some NDP voices in other parts of the country. He said this was a loss not just for the party, but for Canada.
