Canada's chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam announced on Friday that Health Canada had approved the use of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine as a booster for children aged five to 11.

She said the National Advisory Committee for Immunization (NACI) also issued guidance for its use in Canada.

The update comes as the uptake of fourth vaccine doses stalls at about 10 per cent nationally, leaving questions about what the government's strategy on messaging will be going into the fall.

There has been advice given by doctors across the country for people to keep up with vaccinations ahead of the fall, when illnesses including influenza are expected to spread, in addition to increased risk factors for COVID-19 as more people move indoors.

Asked Friday whether people should wait to get a COVID-19 booster for when potential bivalent vaccines are available, Tam said people should "look at their own set of circumstances." She said while the bivalent vaccine would target both the original strain but also the BA.1 Omicron strain, people should consider their risk factors for exposure and potential for severe outcomes and not miss the chance to get a booster dose if it's been six months since last infection or booster.
