Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly will speak to reporters Tuesday after announcing her decision to expel a Chinese diplomat involved in an alleged plan to threaten a Conservative MP and his family.
Joly will be joined by International Development Minister Harjit Sajjan, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Marc Miller and Marci Ien, minister of women, gender equality and youth.
Joly is also expected to announce that Canada will throw its hat in the ring for a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council, pledging to advance issues from online speech to access to abortion.
Two government sources familiar with the matter, who were not authorized to speak publicly before the official announcement, told the Canadian Press that Canada is running on a bid that will highlight six main priorities, including holding states accountable for locking up human-rights activists.
The announcement would come after Joly said Monday that Canada would expel Zhao Wei, a diplomat at the Chinese consulate in Toronto who allegedly worked with Beijing to target MP Michael Chong and his relatives in Hong Kong.
