Tensions between the U.S. and China are escalating following a dangerously close encounter between the two countries' warships in the Taiwan Strait.

China claims the democratic self-governing island of Taiwan as its territory, and similarly claims the strait is part of its exclusive economic zone.

Mackenzie Gray reports from the HMCS Montréal with a look at the strong show of force by Canada and other western countries in the East China Sea, the growing fears China could invade Taiwan, when the Pentagon could believes such an attack could happen and how the West might respond.
