Grant Shapps has unveiled plans he says will block P&O Ferries from sacking 800 workers and hiring agency staff on the cheap.

It follows the mass outrage triggered by the company's decision to shed hundreds of employees without notice.

The Transport Secretary told MPs he would give UK ports the power to refuse access to regular ferry services that do not pay workers the minimum wage.

However, the British Ports Association warned the move "could be unworkable".
