In California’s Los Angeles county on Tuesday, fire crews gained some control over the area's first major wildfire of the year after days of intense battling.

Dubbed the “Post fire,” the blaze has spread more than 15,000 acres and is now 20 per cent contained, according to officials.

Despite the progress, crews warned wind conditions are posing a challenge for the firefighters as their efforts to mitigate the cross-county blaze continue.

“We have two and a half years of unburned fuel in a lot of places because we haven't had a big major fire over the last couple of seasons,” L.A. County Fire Chief Sheila Kelliher told reporters on Monday. “We've had [them] bumping up but not to this size. So, there's a lot of unburned fuel out there and a lot of growth, and with the wind and the humidity, it's dried out already.”
