A Calgary senior trying to turn her retirement dream into a reality has had that dream shattered. She’s out tens of thousands of dollars and can’t open her new business thanks to what she calls “a contractor nightmare.”

Retiree Christina Lo’s dream was to open a vegan cafe and grocer, but the reality is most of the business remains closed — a huge mess with exposed wires, uneven floors, no bathroom ceiling and a cooler with about $50,000 in unused foods.

Lo started to put her savings and love into this renovation project back in February. She said she was advised it would take four weeks to transform the space, but that timeline kept getting extended.

“All my money is all tied up,” Lo said, tearing up. “I have no way out.”
