Following Buffalo Bills' Damar Hamlin's cardiac arrest during a game, his doctors said on Thursday that while he remains on a ventilator, he can communicate through writing.

“He is unable to speak with us yet as he still has a breathing tube in and we're still assisting him with ventilation,” said Dr. Timothy Pritts of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

After coming to, the first thing he wrote on a clipboard was, "Did we win?" about the game he played when the collapse took place.

Dr. Pritts and Dr. William Knight also said while there are "many steps" ahead of Hamlin in his recovery, the medical team would like to see him breathe without assistance as an immediate step.

The doctors also said that he was not given a tracheostomy following the medical incident — contrary to rumours. Instead, he was intubated on the field and received a "textbook" resuscitation on the field.
