The historic Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires, Argentina has been transformed into a nighttime soup kitchen as the South American country grapples with soaring inflation and rising levels of poverty.

Argentina is battling annual inflation of 124 per cent, which is pushing poverty levels above 40 per cent. The country is also facing a looming recession and dwindling reserves of foreign currency.

“I pick cardboard from the morning, and I walk until 7 or 8 at night. What for? TO make 3,000 ($US8.60) or 4,000 pesos ($US11.40),” said Erica Maya, a mother of six, who attended the soup kitchen on Tuesday.

“Nothing. You can get a pack of noodles, tomato sauce, but you don’t have enough for the meat or (chicken) wings. It’s better to come here because you eat better. You leave full and content.”

The crisis has hammered the centre-left Peronist government and its presidential candidate, Economy Minister Sergio Massa, as right-wing candidate Javier Melei is flying high in the polls.
