A British diplomat has been hailed a hero after saving a drowning student from a river in central China.

Stephen Ellison, who has recently taken up a post as the consul general in Chongqing, took off his shoes and jumped in to save the woman, who appeared to have lost consciousness.

She quickly came round and has invited the 61-year-old, who is from the north east of England, to dinner to say thank you.
