Russian President Vladimir Putin said in recorded remarks to a summit of the BRICS countries in South Africa on Tuesday that the grouping was on course to meet the aspirations of most of the world's population.

The BRICS members — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — represent more than 40 per cent of the world's population.

Putin also discussed Russia’s economy, saying volatility on financial markets has hampered companies' investment decisions and was something that needed to be brought under control.

The trouble strengthened sharply last week after hitting a near 17-month low of 101.75 to the dollar, as the central bank hiked its key rate by 350 basis points to 12 per cent and exporters increased selling of their foreign currency revenue following discussions with Russian authorities.

He also claimed the Russian economy has overtaken Germany.
