An environmental activist group is warning of an increased risk of an environmental disaster caused by Brazil’s “graveyard of ships,” due in large part to a sprawling bulk carrier that has been anchored in Rio de Janeiro’s Guanabara Bay for more than six years.

The Sao Luiz is one of dozens of ships abandoned in the heavily polluted bay, which was once home to vast mangroves and thriving marine life. The ship still has some 50 tonnes of fuel in it and has a “high level of corrosion,” the group warns.

“We’re facing not only an environmental problem but also, it impacts Rio de Janeiro’s economy – what is known as the economy of the sea,” explains Movimento Baia Viva President Sergio Ricardo.

Ricardo estimates the bay’s pollution costs some 50 billion reais (US $9.6 billion) a year in lost production.
