Thousands of Brazilians gathered in São Paulo on Monday to demand punishment for those who attacked Brazil's Supreme Court, Congress and presidential palace a day earlier.
Neto Duarte, a demonstrator, said the attack was the worst moment in the country's history since the 1964 coup that established a military dictatorship. On Sunday, supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro rampaged through the buildings, smashing windows, furniture and artwork.
"The fight now is to support the government that was democratically elected and we are not going to leave the streets," Duarte said.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva vowed to get to the bottom of what he called a "coup," saying he would work to find those responsible for organizing the riot. He added that as of Monday, 1,500 who took part in the attack had been detained and would be held in jail until the investigation was finished.
