Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced Wednesday that the Black Sea grain deal has been extended for another two months, a day before the pact facilitating the safe export of Ukrainian grain was due to expire.

Russia’s foreign ministry confirmed the deal had been extended but said the country’s overall assessment of the situation regarding the deal had not changed. Russia threatened to quit the arrangement agreed on last July unless a list of conditions was met.

Meanwhile, UN chief Antonio Guterres said the organization, which played an instrumental role in negotiating the deal, welcomed the extension but added that “issues remain.”

“These agreements matter for global food security. Ukrainian and Russian products feed the world,” Guterres added.
