Black Friday is seen by many as the kick-off to the holiday shopping season. Images of long lineups outside big box stores and chaos in malls come to mind as people hunt for the ultimate deals.

According to the Retail Council of Canada, the average person is planning to spend $790 over the holidays — the same amount as last year.

But some retailers are taking a different approach, with new initiatives inviting people to rethink the rampant consumerism.

From using their dollars to make a difference to buying “less” by buying “better,” Anne Gaviola explains.
