U.S. President Joe Biden addressed the nation Wednesday afternoon, providing an update on the federal government's response to both Hurricane Idalia — which made made landfall in Florida Wednesday — and the ongoing Maui wildfires.

"I don't think anybody can deny the impact of the climate crisis anymore. Just look around," Biden said. "Historic floods, more intense droughts, extreme heat (and) wildfires have caused significant damage like we've never seen before. Not only throughout the Hawaiian Islands and the United States, but in Canada and other parts of the world," he added.

In the federal government's emergency response to Hurricane Idalia, Biden said that they are "ready to mobilize" to get the support governors in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina may need as the storm rages on.

Though Idalia quickly shifted from a category three to a category one hurricane throughout the day, Biden said the tropical storm "is still very dangerous with winds up to 75 mph."

While he admitted it would "take a long time," Biden announced US$95 million in funding, from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, to help "harden the grid" in Maui and restore power across the devastated community — which continues to face wildfires.
