U.S. President Joe Biden called NASA’s Perseverance team on Thursday to congratulate them on the rover’s successful landing on Mars.

“It’s astounding what you did,” Biden said during the virtual meeting.

The president said NASA had brought back the “American spirit” at a time when it is “so desperately needed,” adding that historians would write about their accomplishment.

The Perseverance rover successfully touched down on the red planet in February on its mission to search for signs of life, while also setting aside the most prominent rock samples for return to earth in a decade.
