Premier John Horgan took questions from the media on Thursday, following the first week of the fall legislative session.

Asked about COVID-19 vaccine mandates in schools and the school districts' ability to decide whether to enforce one, instead of the province deciding, Horgan said mandates are a last resort, but that school board trustees are elected and have a right to have a say in their community.

"It is a very small group of people who are not vaccinated," Horgan told the news conference.

Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has advised him on Health Canada's review into Pfizer vaccine for kids ages five to 11, he added.

Earlier that day, Pfizer Inc and BioNTech announced they have asked U.S. regulators to approve emergency use of their vaccine for children in that age range.
