Ukrainian soldiers fired mortars at Russian positions near Bakhmut on Thursday and Friday, saying Russian activity in the area has risen over the last week. According to soldiers, up to 100 mortar shells are fired daily from a position in the eastern Ukraine region.
"It is hard to push them (Russians) out of there. But it is fine, we are working. It is good that they can’t find us: we fire at them, and they return fire on some other greeneries,” said a soldier who goes by the call sign 'Medvid,' which is Ukrainian for 'Bear'.
Another soldier, Ruslan, said he thought Russian forces have enough ammunition and quite a lot of manpower, and that “enemy activity has risen.” He added that the troop’s purpose is to neutralize the enemy and that they do “everything to make their numbers decrease” every day.
Moscow regards its assault on Bakhmut, a city of about 70,000 before Russia's full-scale invasion nearly 15 months ago, as an important part of a campaign to capture the rest of the industrial Donbas region of eastern Ukraine. The head of Russian mercenaries fighting in Bakhmut said the city was unlikely to fall in the next two days.
