Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said on Wednesday there's still more work to be done to clear debris in the Patapsco River following the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore, before regular commercial activity could resume and rebuilding of the bridge could occur.

During his press conference, Moore said sonar technology is being used to identify the wreckage in the murky waters of the river.

"The reason that the sonar technology, the reason that the new technologies that have been brought on board by the unified command, the reason why it is so important, it allows us a new level of access and a new level of vision to be able to move the mission forward," he said.

This comes as the U.S. Coast Guard opened up two temporary alternate channels to support commercial traffic, part of a phased approach to opening the main channel leading to the vital port, officials said.

The cargo ship that caused the bridge to collapse on March 26 was carrying hazardous materials, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) previously confirmed. Moore said on Wednesday that samples from the river showed no signs of contamination at this time, though examination will continue.

Six construction workers died as a result of the incident.
