Early Tuesday, a container ship collided with a major bridge in Baltimore, causing the structure to break in a few places and fall into the river below. Several vehicles fell into the chilly waters, and rescuers were initially searching for at least seven people.

According to Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace, two individuals were rescued from the waters beneath the Francis Scott Key Bridge, with one of them in a serious condition. The fire chief stated that authorities may be searching for up to seven people, but noted that this figure is subject to change.

Eyewitness Jayme Krause and her colleagues went to see what had happened. She said, “I’m still kind of in shock, like, it’s just unfortunate that it happened too, because everybody was telling us that a cargo ship hit the support beams, and we couldn’t even see a ship, we couldn’t see anything. In water all we see is the debris of the bridge and support beams, so we had no idea.”

Meanwhile, commenting on the Baltimore bridge incident, a U.K. expert said it is "extremely unusual" for a ship to smash into a bridge span, leading it to collapse.
