Federal authorities have begun the enormous task of investigating what went wrong aboard the cargo ship Dali that led to a catastrophic collapse of Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge and the death of six construction workers.

Sal Mercogliano, a former merchant mariner and maritime expert at Campbell University, says the focus will fall on the reported power problems on the 100,000 ton ship before it set sail early Tuesday morning and struck the bridge.

"So, dockworkers were reporting that there were power outages on the ship during cargo operations. And the question becomes, 'Okay, what's the underlying cause of that?' Was it something, you know, small? Was it rectified? We don't know. But, you know, that's an indication of problems with the vessel," Mercogliano said.
