U.S. President Joe Biden spoke briefly from the White House on Tuesday after a container ship struck a major bridge in Baltimore, collapsing a large section of the Francis Scott Key bridge into the river below early in the morning.

“At this time, we have no other indication, no other reason to believe there was any intentional act here,” Biden said.

“Officials at the scene estimate eight people were unaccounted for,” the president said, adding “that number might change — two have been rescued — one without injury, one in critical condition.”

Biden said he has directed all federal resources to help reconstruct the bridge and when asked if the company that owned the ship involved in the collision would be held responsible financially, he replied “that [it] could be, but we’re not going to wait for that to happen. We’re going to pay to get the bridge rebuilt.”
