Police in Bend, Ore. said on Monday that a gunman killed two people and then died from a self-inflicted gun wound after he went on a shooting spree with an AR-15-style rifle in a shopping centre parking lot and then inside a grocery store.
(00:02:03) - The two victims were 84-year-old customer Glenn Edward Bennet and 66-year-old employee Donald Ray Surrett Jr., who was fatally wounded while trying to disarm the shooter. “Mr. Surrett acted heroically during the terrible incident,” a police representative said. The shooter was identified as 20-year-old resident Ethan Blair Miller.
Eyewitness footage from Sunday showed police and ambulances gathering in the parking lot of the Forum Shopping Center, after they responded to calls of an active shooter at approximately 7 p.m. local time.
Detailing the movement of the shooter during the events, police officials said a gunman had opened fire in the centre's parking lot before he entered the grocery store and shot a person he immediately encountered. That person was taken to a hospital and later died, police chief Mike Krantz said during a late-night news conference.
Police officers found the shooter dead with an AR-15-style rifle nearby his body, he said, noting that police did not open fire.
