Ukrainian and Russian forces are suffering heavy losses as fighting intensifies in eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine's President Zelenskyy says more than 1,100 Russian soldiers have been killed in recent days near Bakhmut, the focus of the fighting. Russia's paramilitary Wagner Group is reportedly still launching ground attacks. Over the weekend, Russia's defence ministry said that over 220 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in the region.

Even as the war rages on, some Ukrainian communities are starting to rebuild. This includes Bucha, a town outside the capital Kyiv. It hit the headlines after evidence emerged that Russian forces had committed atrocities there, captured in photos of a street strewn with bodies.

DW correspondent Amien Essif visited Bucha, and other places trying to start again after being destroyed.
