The failed assassination attempt against former U.S. president Donald Trump has sparked condemnation from leaders around the world, including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Trump was injured after a shooting during a rally in Butler, Pa., on Saturday that left two people dead, including the shooter. Law officials say it was a failed assassination attempt.

The attack is the most serious attempt to assassinate a president or presidential candidate since Ronald Regan was shot in 1981. But it comes on the heels of a number of other violent incidents against politicians around the world.

Political science professor Aurel Braun talks to Global News about the motivations for such attacks.
