Archeologists at an excavation site in southern Israel have uncovered a 2.5 metre-long straight tusk from an ancient elephant that lived approximately half a million years ago.

The tusk was discovered in an area where stone and flint tools, and other animal remains had previously been discovered.

“It’s unique because the state of preservation is really good,” explained Avi Levi, the director of the excavation.

The now-extinct species, much larger than the African elephant, was part of the rich fauna of the area and was hunted by humans for food and possibly symbolic purposes.

Once the conservation process is complete, the tusk will be permanently displayed at the National Campus for the Archaeology of Israel in Jerusalem.
