South Africans lined up over two days to pay respects to Archbishop Desmond Tutu on Thursday, Dec. 30 and Friday, Dec. 31.
The anti-apartheid activist’s body lay in state at St. George’s Cathedral in Cape Town, South Africa, where he would often preach about racial injustice.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner was widely revered across racial and cultural divides for his moral stance and principled fight against white-minority rule.
He died Sunday at the age of 90.
Tutu requested the cheapest coffin and did not want any lavish funeral expense. He will be cremated and his remains will be interred behind the cathedral pulpit.
