Americans mark first Juneteenth federal holiday

On June 19th, 1865, the abolition of slavery was announced in Texas – more than two years after the Emancipation Act ended the enslavement of Black people in the country.

Across the U.S., Americans are celebrating Juneteenth as an official federal holiday for the first time. It’s already been recognized as a holiday by some states, and now there’s a push for Juneteenth’s history to be taught in schools.
