Juneteenth: Biden officially makes June 19 a national holiday in the US | FULL

U.S. President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law on Thursday, making it a new U.S. national holiday.

The House voted 415-14 on Wednesday to make "Juneteenth" or June 19th, the 12th federal holiday.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas – two months after the Confederate States of America had surrendered. That was also about two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation freed all slaves in the United States.

It becomes the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was created in 1983.
