Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was transferred to a hospital from prison on Monday, authorities said Monday, as concerns continue to mount over the health of one of President Vladimir Putin's staunchest critics.

Authorities claimed they had offered Navalny proper care, but the 44-year-old has refused it and insisted on being treated by a doctor of his choice from outside the facility, which Russia has declined to provide. Navalny started a hunger strike on March 31 after being refused care for acute back and leg pain.

His imprisonment has prompted allies to call for countrywide protests, but the Kremlin has said the calls are "provocative" and illegal. International bodies are also raising concerns, with the U.S. warning of consequences if Navalny dies while in prison.
