Canadian Women and Gender Equality Minister Maryam Monsef clarified her comments on Wednesday when she called the Taliban, a group Canada recognizes as a terrorist organization, "our brothers."

Monsef reiterated the Canada condemns their actions in Afghanistan and that she meant it as a "cultural" reference.

Conservative Party Leader Erin O’Toole and Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau reacted to the incident while on the campaign trail.

O’Toole called it “completely unacceptable” and added Canada needs a prime minister who will act in the national interest “at home and abroad.”

Trudeau said Monsef “expressed her views” and that the Canadian government will continue to recognize the Taliban as a terrorist organization.
