More than 20 people - including nine children -are reported to have been killed in Israeli air strikes on Gaza, after dozens of rockets were fired from the territory towards Jerusalem and other cities.

The deaths follow days of violent clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli security forces around the the Al-Aqsa mosque in East Jerusalem.

The past few days have seen the worst violence in Jerusalem for years, with more than 300 Palestinians injured in confrontations with Israeli security forces.

East Jerusalem has been occupied by Israel since 1967. Palestinians are protesting against plans to evict people from their homes in an area claimed by Jewish settlers.
