7th Highland Park shooting victim dies, police reveal shooter’s previous records with weapons

Authorities in Highland Park, Ill. said at a news conference on Tuesday that a seventh victim has died at a hospital in a different county following a shooting at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park. The names of six of the seven fatal victims were released by the Lake County coroner Jennifer Banek.

64-year-old Katherine Goldstein, 35-year-old Irina McCarthy, 37-year-old Kevin McCarthy, 63-year-old Jackeline (Jacki) Sundheim, 88-year-old Stephen Straus, all of them from Highland Park and 78-year-old Nicolas Toledo Zaragoza from Morelos Mexico, were named by Banek.

During the news conference, Lake County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Chris Covelli also told the media that 21-year-old Robert E. Crimo III, who has been charged with seven counts of first-degree murder, had come under previous police attention with knives having been confiscated from the individual.

Covelli cited two previous encounters between Crimo and law enforcement officers, including an emergency call reporting an attempted suicide and another regarding alleged threats he had directed a family members.

In an interview, eyewitness Alexander Sandoval also described the harrowing experience he and his son had during the shooting. “When the shots stopped again, that's when we started, we decided we had to run… We ran behind the building and I put my son in a dumpster and he sat there with his dog and I went back to look for the rest of my family… It was just horrible.”
