A 7.0-magnitude earthquake near Acapulco rattled Mexico’s Guerrero state on Tuesday and shook buildings as far as 200 miles (321 km) away in Mexico City, killing at least one man who was crushed by a falling post and damaging buildings.

Footage from Mexico City’s Azcapotzalco neighbourhood shows startled occupants of an apartment rush to steady themselves and pets run for cover as the earthquake shakes their building, causing overhead light fittings to swing wildly.

And guests from a beach resort evacuated to the streets amid the aftershocks.

"We don't know if we should stay or return because the highway is dangerous. Because of the quake there could have been mudslides in the highway and to go back at night is also dangerous,” said tourist Xochitl Gonazlez.

Meanwhile, subway passengers stuck inside the Pino Suarez station in Mexico City leaned against the walls during the quake.
