At a virtual presentation on the 2022 hurricane season on Tuesday, Canadian Hurricane Centre Meteorologist Bob Robichaud said that there is a 65% probability of an upcoming active hurricane season, with an expectation of 14-21 named storms, of which six to ten will reach hurricane status.
“Where these storms go depends on the weather of the day,” Robichaud said. “And that’s what we’re not able to predict this far in advance.”
Ocean Frontier Institute Scientific Director Anya Waite said that the increase in hurricanes can “absolutely” be linked back to climate change, affecting industries from wineries and fisheries to individuals alike.
If the predictions are correct, this will be the seventh straight year of an above average number of storms in the area.
