Thousands of people gathered to celebrate the Fourth of July and to watch the annual fireworks display at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday.

The event follows U.S. President Joe Biden's annual White House military barbecue.

The July 4 holiday, also known as Independence Day, celebrates the U.S. founders' declaration of independence from Britain in 1776.
