Alongside his wife, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, U.S. President Joe Biden honoured troops at the annual White House military barbecue on Tuesday, commemorating the Fourth of July — or Independence Day.

Before introducing her husband, Dr. Biden addressed the U.S. Armed Forced and its dedicated soldiers directly, commending them for their consistent sacrifices. “We are so grateful for all you do,” she said.

Each year, soldiers, military officials and their families are invited to the White House for an annual Independence Day barbecue.

After echoing his wife's sentiments, President Biden went on to remind the nation that democracy in the U.S. is “never guaranteed,” urging citizens to “re-dedicate” themselves to ensuring it stays.

“Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We haven’t always lived up to those words, but we’ve never walked away from them. And today, and all days, we have to say clearly, ‘We never will,’” the Democratic Leader said.
