Washington D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said three people were killed and two people were in hospital after a mass shooting incident shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday.

According to MPD's Acting Chief, Pamela Smith, the victims who lost their lives included two men and one woman at the scene, and that the two hospitalized were male victims.

During a press conference, Smith expressed her deep frustration with the recent surge in gun violence and called for community involvement to help prevent violence.

“We need the community involved. If you saw something, we need you to say something. This kind of gun violence is not acceptable in the District of Columbia, this is not a war zone,” Smith said.
