Over 200 Brazillian police officers took part in an armed raid on one of the largest favelas in Brazil’s capital – leaving 25 people dead.
One officer was killed, along with two dozen suspected criminals. A number of bystanders were also injured in the shootout.
The raid – which took place on Thursday – was the first of its kind since June 2020, after the Brazilian Supreme Court ordered armed raids to be paused while the country dealt with the pandemic.
But the government has since restarted its crackdown on organized crime.
Thursday’s raid on the Jacarezinho favela targeted an organization known as ‘Comando Vermelho (Red Command)’ – which is suspected of weapons and drugs trafficking.
