The coronavirus continues to have a strong and painful grip on India as its record-breaking surge continues.
Official numbers put total new cases at more than 3.5 million this week and deaths are now close to a quarter of a million. And the Indian Institute of Science has predicted more than 400,000 Covid-19 deaths are still to come. Right now, India is vaccinating about 2.1 million people daily, or around 0.15 percent of its population.
The healthcare system is completely overwhelmed, frontline workers are overburdened and families are shattered. But the issue has become more political and polarising than before. Debates, whether it is new variants, waning immunity or lax behaviour, continue as numbers skyrocket.
