The horrific death toll from a year of Russia's war in Ukraine has sadly made funerals and burials a daily ritual, testing the strength and resilience of the Ukrainian people.

The Ukrainian and Russian militaries have each suffered an estimated 100,000 causalities. The United Nations says more than 8,000 civilians have died, although the true number is believed to be much higher.

Global's Jeff Semple reports from Lviv with the story of one of the many soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice and the grief of loved ones left behind.
