Thousands of Serbians gathered in the capital of Belgrade on Saturday in yet another protest demanding the annulment of the results of parliamentary and municipal elections which took place on Dec. 17.

Serbian President Aleksander Vuvic’s governing party — the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) — was declared the winner of the election with just over 46 per cent of the preliminary votes. However, opposition party Serbia Against Violence claimed the election was stolen and accused the SNS of vote fraud.

Despite faltering health as a result of an ongoing hunger strike, opposition leader Marinika Tepic took the stage on Saturday, telling protesters, again, that the “elections must be annulled.” The politician's speech was met with a roar of applause and chants against Vuvic as she was helped off the stage.

“Freedom and democracy — this is something that belongs to Belgrade,” protester Katarina Popovic said on Saturday. “We, the citizens, now send a sign that we want this,” she added, demanding change in the country’s government.

The preliminary results determined that Serbia Against Violence came second in the election with just over 23.5 per cent of the vote. Serbia’s Socialist Party polled third.
