Thousands of protesters gathered in cities across France on Thursday to ask the French government to shelve plans to make people work longer for their pensions. Trade unions urged a show of force on the streets a day before the Constitutional Council's ruling on the legality of the bill that would raise the state pension age by two years to 64.
If the council gives its approval, possibly with some caveats, the government will be entitled to promulgate the law, which the government hopes will eventually put an end to protests that have at times turned violent and coalesced widespread anger against French President Emmanuel Macron.
"There are millions of people on the streets, there's no reason why they shouldn't listen to what people have to say. We don't want to work until 64 (years of age)," said Kathy Brochard, a 50-year-old teacher at a Paris vocational school.
"It's not just pensions. The price of gas is falling while we are still paying as much as before. The food industry is filling its pockets. Whether true or false, in any case, it is unbearable. The idea that there are war profiteers everywhere is unbearable," 70-year-old former nurse Marie Brune said.
